Preparing for your ultrasound

Preparing for your ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound

Preparation for ultrasound depends on the organ to be examined.

  • Before any kind of ultrasound you must not eat any food for 12 hours.
  • Within 2 days before the examination, discard the following products: black bread, peas, beans, fresh vegetables, cabbage, milk, fruit, and sweets.
  • Within 2 days before the examination, take 2-4 activated charcoal tablets before meals.
  • Two days before the examination, undergo enema cleansing (not on the day before).
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or colonoscopy should not be performed before the examination.
  • Before the ultrasound of spleen, liver, pancreas and gallbladder, the patient should eat light meals containing the minimum amount of fats for the dinner. In addition, the procedure should better be performed in the morning, on an empty stomach.
  • In order to obtain the correct results of a renal ultrasound, the patient should drink a couple of glasses of liquid, preferably plain water or juice, an hour before the examination, as well as refrain from eating for at least 8 hours. Much fluid in the bladder will allow reproducing a broad picture of the condition of the kidneys.
Refraining from food will help avoid excessive gas production since the kidneys are located behind the intestines and stomach, and excessive gases will adversely affect the examination results.
  • An ultrasound of the abdominal aorta requires the patient to refrain from food for 12 hours before the procedure.
