Covid-19 testing: fetching material, diagnostic aspects
When a client calls the clinic with typical symptoms – complicated breathing, dry cough, high fever – there is a suspicion of a Covid-19 virus infection. To confirm the diagnosis, doctors Universum Clinic recommends coronavirus test by PCR or express method.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR test) is the most sensitive and accurate method of modern diagnostics of viral diseases. The polymerase chain reaction is carried out by using special enzymes that copy many times fragments of DNA and RNA of pathogens, which are contained in samples of biological material taken from a patient.
Express method of diagnosis qualitatively detects the presence of antibodies in blood samples, and gives a result within ten minutes.
As antibodies are produced only 5-7 days after infection, the primary test can give a false negative result, and mislead physicians. To rule out inaccurate diagnosis, doctors perform a PCR test to determine the virus from the test material – throat slime. The initial test must be confirmed by a secondary PCR study.
Test run time – 24-48 hours from the time of taking the smear.
Not recommended:
- 2-3 hours before the test eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, rinsing your mouth / throat, chewing gum, smoking;
- 3 hours before the test, use drugs for irrigation of the oropharynx and preparations for resorption;
- immediately before taking the material, use lozenges to freshen your breath.
