Important information about Vaccination

Today’s world Vaccination is the only proven way to protect people from infectious diseases. The body reacts to the vaccine, producing immunity to the disease. As you know, global and individual vaccination campaigns inside the country allow to provide people with an effective measure and also to prevent the spread of the diseases. Well known information is that due to vaccination, humanity overcame smallpox, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, and diphtheria pandemics.
In Ukraine, for a long time, due to the soviet union, vaccination was unconscious and mandatory. The consequences of various diseases and developmental disorders of kids were associated with vaccinations. Adults did not understand at all why vaccination was needed. Doctors had lack of understanding about communication and explanations for people. Also, there was lack of open information sources and scientific background.
Progressive modern countries necessarily use vaccination in the HealthCare Management system as a mandatory, effective and conscious factor to protect person and decrease risk of diseases and complications.
What is important to know about vaccinations for adults over 18?
For best understanding, vaccination can be divided into:

  • Planned, for people without any health risks (routine vaccination).
  • Planned, for people who travel to different countries of the world (vaccination for travelers).
  • Emergency, in case of medical risks (emergency vaccination)

Routine planned vaccination

Routine vaccination for adults includes:

  1. Vaccination against tetanus and diphtheria – must be repeated every 10 years for adults. The Boostrix vaccine (manufactured by GSK, Belgium) is used. The Boostrix vaccine is available at Universum Clinic in Kyiv for vaccination
  2. Vaccination against pneumococcal disease is carried out once for persons aged 2 years and over. Usually, in Ukraine, most adults over 20 years old do not have such vaccination. The vaccine Prevenar 13 (manufactured by Pfizer, Belgium) is used. According to the CDC (USA) Center for Disease Control, such vaccination should be repeated at the age of 65  and over to avoid complications of many diseases.
  3. Vaccination against influenza is carried out once a year. In Ukraine, usually 3- or 4-component vaccines are available, Vaxigrip (Sanofi, France), Influvak (GSK, Belgium), GC Flu (South Korea).
  4. Vaccination against meningococcus - is carried out once for persons aged 2 years and over. Usually, in Ukraine, most adults over 20 years old do not have such vaccination. Menactra (Sanofi, USA) and Nimenrix (Pfizer, Belgium) vaccines are used
  5. Vaccination against hepatitis A and B. Adults should check their personal information about vaccines, because until 2000 in Ukraine, vaccination against hepatitis B was not mandatory for children, so people older than 23-25 years old do not have such vaccination. You need 2 doses of the vaccine to protect against hepatitis A and 3 doses to protect against hepatitis B. Vaccines as Engerix GSK, Belgium, Havrix GSK Belgium, Twinrix GSK Belgium are used for vaccination against hepatitis.

Vaccination for people who travel includes routine vaccinations for adults plus special following vaccination:

  1. Vaccination against hepatitis A. It is relevant for traveling in the countries of Asia, Africa, and South America. The vaccine used is Havrix (against hepatitis A) GSK Belgium, Twinrix (against hepatitis A and B) GSK Belgium. 2 doses 6 months apart are required to protect against hepatitis A.
  2. Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis. It is relevant for traveling to northern countries, such as the Baltic countries, northern Europe, and Canada. FSME immune vaccine (Prizer, Austria) is used. 3 doses are required with an interval of 14 days between 1 and 2 and 5 months between 2 and 3 doses, then revaccination is required every 3-5 years.
  3. Yellow fever vaccination. It is relevant for traveling in the countries of Asia and Africa. Stamaril vaccine (Sanofi, France) is used, 1 vaccine is needed to create lifelong immunity. In the risk group are people who work in the specified countries, for such persons there is a need to repeat the vaccination.
  4. Vaccination against typhoid fever. It is relevant for traveling in the countries of Asia, Africa, South America. The Tifim VI vaccine (Sanofi, France) is used, 1 vaccination is required to achieve lifelong immunity.

Emergency vaccination

Emergency vaccination is used if there is risk of infection with various infectious diseases. Such vaccination should be carried out immediately. Emergency Rabies vaccination is necessary in case of animal’s bites that do not live with you. Emergency tetanus and diphtheria vaccination is necessary in case of contamination of wounds. Emergency vaccination from hepatitis B case of damage to medical workers with medical syringes and medical instruments after patients.

  1. Vaccination against rabies is carried out immediately after an animal’s bite. Indirab (India) vaccine is used, 5 doses of vaccine are required for vaccination course.
  2. Vaccination against tetanus is carried out immediately after contamination of the wound, you can use anti-tetanus toxoid (AP, Biolik, Kharkiv) and Bustrix vaccine (GSK, Belgium), 1 dose is enough for emergency protection.
  3. Vaccination after suspicion of hepatitis B infection is indicated for those who do not have scheduled vaccination and have not repeated vaccination against hepatitis B (mainly medical workers of certain professions).
